The most distinguishing trait of a true visionary leader is their ability to craft an emotionally engaging picture of a desired end state, one that motivates and enlists their followers in believing it is truly possible. History has provided amazing examples, like our Founding Fathers creating a democracy, Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and more recently, Obama’s original campaign founded on the “Audacity of Hope”.
Visionary Leaders have high levels of emotional intelligence and are able to influence others to join the cause using empathy and interpersonal ability.
They have great leadership agility, and utilize stakeholder management to get people on board. They are Catalyst level leaders, who search for and include ideas from all levels of the organization and outside the company, their country and culture. Inclusivity is a hallmark of a visionary leader.
Another strength is the ability to keep their followers’ levels of engagement and motivation up even in the midst of working the plan to get there. These visionary leaders don’t ignore the importance of crafting a true strategic plan, including the necessary tactics to make the vision a reality.
